Vehko 1715 B665655-A S Ag Ni Ri 215 Im f

Vehko has adopted an economic principle that sets it apart from many worlds in the Imperium. On Vehko there is no income tax, instead it is the use of resources, by individuals or companies, that is heavily taxed. This has had two main effects. Firstly companies are careful to use the lower taxed renewable resources, and not to damage existing resources through pollution ( which is counted as "part use" ). Secondly since manpower is cheap but machinery is not, many production processes are conducted using traditional labour intensive, and generally environmentally friendly, methods. Since agriculture fits better with such an economy than manufacturing it is no surprise that Vehko has developed primarily as an agricultural world. Visiting traders often remain in orbit to avoid the punative resource taxes for spacecraft. The key exports are unprocessed agricultural goods, and the most popular imports are resource intensive machinery and vehicles.

Stedeng is the private world of Count Consetta Hatowski, a minor Dashinshaii noble. Hatowski retired with the rank of Brigadier from the Imperial Marines in 1101 and immediately turned the family home into the largest private military academy in Gushemege. Hatowski not only trains officers and men for the Imperial and colonial forces but also maintains a divisional sized mercenary unit. As mercenaries go the "Ossin Ruh" are well trained, well equipped, and expensive. Katowski is always anxious to avoid contracts whch may bring him into conflict with Imperial forces, and often sends units to Corridor for "live training" against the Vargr.

Ceoth 1737 B595325-C S Lo Ni 614 Im f

Defu on Ceoth is one of the great archaeological sites of Gushemege. Lying underwater on the continental shelf in middle/high latitudes Defu conists of a complex of some 250 multifaceted towers. Analysis places their age at 6000 PI and suggests a TL6 culture. The towers appear to be made of a metallic coral hybrid, and interior design suggests swimming inhabitants of about a metre length. The surrounding area shows signs of vulcanism that may have buried other traces of the culture, but the continuing IISS/University of Sharim research programme found more modest ruins about 2000 km away in 996 and the excavations there are nearing completion.

Referee: The Defu culture was a bony aquaform native to Ceoth. They developed a fire-less technology through harnessing a local coral to produce artifacts, first of chalk and later using metals and plastics. Their aquatic and unexpansive nature kept them from detection by early human explorers and settlers to the region. They died out around 3000 PI as a result of a climactic shift that destroyed the food chain on which they depended, the vulcanism occured millennia later. The Defu paid the price for failing to expand and explore, and being dependent on a few locations and a fragile food chain. The Defu way of using of coral is only now becoming clear in Gushemege's research laboratories and potentially has many spinoffs for nanotech research.

A thriving agriproducts exporter Apay Maru suffered from a major global war between its 4 governments from 1105 to 1111. The war went nuclear late in 1110 at which point the subsector government stepped in and enforced a 'Pax Imperia'. IISS has extended its base to assist with the recovery program, and a S'mrii ZKK team arrived on the planet in 1114. A prime reason for the interest in the recovery of pre-war conditions on Apay Maru is the demand for ground plants and products on the neighbouring water worlds.

Imperial Research Station Pi is located in the Mezregh system. Little is known about the research conducted there. As with other Imperial Stations security is very tight but observers have noted two things of interest. Firstly there appear to be no testing or danger areas, and accommodation is close to the labs, suggesting that the research is not in anyway dangerous, which would rule out weapon or biotech research. Secondly the Research Station is a major buyer of super-computers and is rumoured to have the most concentrated computing resource in the Imperium. This has led some observers to beleive that the Station is involved with cryptographic or psychohistorical research.

Referee: Research Station Pi is not engaged in cryptography or psychohistory, but does indeed have very large computing resources. The best that is known about the research is that it concerns the top secret "Project Ptolmey". Historical research indicates that Ptolmey was a legendary librarian in early Terran history, which has led some to believe that RSPi is the site of the Universal Imperium Data Project, or a back up site for Reference.

In the depths of the Tingan jungle on Toyusk lies a 250km labyrinth, built of now greatly decayed stonewalls and covered by a 2m deep layer of slate and soil. Discovered before the Long Night by Vilani settlers the Labyrinth has proved a constant enigma. There is no trace of any past civilisation on the planet, and the most advanced lifeforms are primtive amphibians. Toyusk has attracted the attention of many survey teams since it is a near Terran prime planet. However all surveys have been abandoned due to the acute hallucinations suffered by the visitors. The wearing of filtration masks brings the effect to a tolerable level, but it is still sufficient to prevent conventional settlement. Toyusk does provide a home for a few small colonies of drug, net and wirehead addicts, who find that on Toyusk they can enjoy unparalleled consensic hallucinations for free. Needless to say most of these people are now certifiably mad. IISS keeps a watch on the planet and provides help, advice and security to visiting science teams. There is a possibility that the world may be posted as an Amber Zone in the near future.

Referee: The hallucinations are psionic, although a wind-borne micro-organism acts as an "amplifier". This fact is known to IISS and a number of psi/neurotech companies, and IISS is trying to prevent any exploitation. Raising the status to Amber Zone would be a first step, and IISS is willing to go to Red if necessary. The labyrinth is beleived by most to be the source of the disturbances, but by what mechanism people are unwilling to say.

Fay 1925 C77869C-9 S Ag Ni 421 Im f

Fay Freeworld is unique in Gushemege for being a world whose sole purpose is trade. Historically Fay grew to importance through victualling passing ships and being the only J-1 link between the worlds of the Gushemege Main and those of the heartland. Fay soon saw that its position was a double edged sword, in times of peace it could make a fortune from trade, but in times of war it became of strategic importance. In -5385 the first Freeworld Declaration was made that prohibited armed ships of any type from entering the system, but which allowed free passage to any other craft of any power. During the wars of the Ziru Sirka, the Rule of Man, the Long Night and the Third Imperium Fay has remained a Freeworld, often being used for exchange of prisoners of the signing of truces. During the Civil War the IISS decided to "guarantee" Fay's status by basing an unarmed Squadron there, despite the fact that the conflict was light years away. IISS claimed that they made the move because population decline on Fay was so great that the world could no longer properly man its SDB squadron, and so guarantee its own freedom. The population of Fay is highly inbred and off-worlders are very rarely granted resident status. The Fay families, or Burrkers, date back millennia, but increasing genetic problems have indeed put the whole of the population's survival in doubt.

Howarth 1926 B2628CB-D 513 Im m

Howarth is a small world with a relatively high population ( 700 million ) and a good tech level ( TL13 ). The pressure of population and the continous water shortage as led to a clear governmental objective, and a significant importance being placed on ordinances related to movement, housing, and water use. As a result whilst the government is entrusted to a competent President the real power lies in the Bects, or courts. These are drawn from a judicial profession which Howarthi can elect to enter from age 30, subject to passing a rigorous socio-ethical examination and legal apprenticeship. The average age of Becten is 45, and they are well regarded by the majority of the population, due to their near ideal balance of experience, good sense, and relative youth. It is this trust in the Becten that enables Howarthi to live easily with the prevalent extreme law level. The Howartian jungles are the original home of the Vesu gliders.

Vesu

The Vesu is a native of Howarth in Dashinshaii Subsector. Vesu are small ( 1kg ) gliders that evolved in the few rainforests and jungles of their homeworld. Vesu are able to soar in the jungles many thermals for hours at a time, their small size enabling them to avoid collisions in the dense supergrowth. A filter by nature the Vesu has a large front "mouth" which sweeps any particles in its path into its gut. Vesu offer little real threat to sentients, although they will usually attempt a "sweep" on the food source and their tough frontal horn has been known to penetrate mesh. Vesu are usually found in small flocks of 6 to 20 creatures, mostly in the upper reaches of the forest, just below the canopy. Vesu eggs are easily mistaken for blue hued amber like jewels, and it was this that led to their spreading across much of the Gushemege heartland. Vesu eggs are still used for decoration but are now first sterilised with UV light. There is also a keen market in fake Vesu eggs.

Unlardigard Technology Institute

UTI is the foremost technical institute in Gushemege. Its specialities are engineering, mining and archaeotechnology ( and the associated reverse engineering ). The UTI's Merara Foundation is a leading investigator of Ancient sites; but UTI's real value to the sector lies in its practical academic support to the industrial worlds and corporations of the Heartland.

Plutand Economic Union ( -1309 to c.-540 )

As Gushemege sunk into the Long Night the desert world of Unlardigard found itself in dire straits, since the minimal native life offered little sustenance and the hydroponic gardens were prone to failure. Trill, as a better endowed near terran-prime world, extracted a high price for its agricultural trade, and assumed the position of overlord. As the Night deepened Trill's higher technology began failing, and it became dependent on the resourcefulness of the Unlardigard technologists. In -1309 the two worlds signed the Treaty of Plutand, pledging mutual aid and support. Using Trillian hardware and Unlardigard know-how the Plutand Economic Union was able to reach out to Xanten, Glipli, and even occasionally to Zanish. The Union was able to sustain TL10 for most of the Long Night.

An inevitable side effect is that Hopkins tides are complex and severe, with the result that most habitation is well in land and high up, and sea transport is minimal.

Aisteaya is one of Gushemege's Aslan worlds, but has several notable differences from the rest. For a start the world was settled by different clans, the Tralyeaeawi and Aokhalte. Secondly the two clans have little to do with one another. The Tralyeaeawi live in domed arcologies, where large air conditioning systems mitigate against the hot ambient temperatures of Aisteaya. The Tralyeaeawi have embraced modern technology and have an active TL9 civilisation. By contrast the Aokhalte have adopted a bedouin existence out in the hot deserts. They settled Aisteaya two centuries before the Tralyeaeawi arrived, and feel put out by the latter's takeover of the world. The two clans do have to interact for trade, the Aisteaya bringing in spices, foodstuffs, and minerals from the desert, and the Traleaeawi providing the more advanced processing, medical, and off-world trading facilities.

Vuyha lies on a spur of the Gushemege Main, and has made its fortune over the millenia through its fine soil, nutritious plants and animals and prime postion. The Vuyha-Ouckictach agricombime dominates much of central Gushemege's agribusiness.

Gunby

The gunby is a major source of meat protien in Gushemege and other sectors on this trailing side of the Great Rift. A native of Vuyha the gunby was first recognised as a food source by the Vilani. Since then the gunby has been geneered to survive on a wide variety of worlds. The gunby itself is a grazing herbivore of 80-140kg average mass. Gunbies are trifoil hooved and have two pairs of downward pointing sabre teeth which they used to break up the hard and often frozen ground of their native steppe. The gunby has 4 legs but no tail. It resembles a terran boar, but has a woolier coat ( which is often used in Gushemege clothing ). It originally lived in herds of 10 - 20 on the open steppes of Vuyha. The Bonotil Cof restaurant on Usdiki serves the best Gunby in the Imperium. Leeng's "Saddle of Gunby Au Cruyess" is one of the most superb dishes known to humaniti.

Trill's nations are particularly sensitive about border incursions, and even pitched battles and military campaigns on Trill are forced to observe and respect national borders or risk retaliation by the offended country and alienation from other nations. There are two orbital starports, each run by a different grouping of nations, and three nations have Class A dirtside facilities, most others having B or C class starports. Travellers will find it a long and frustrating process to cross borders on Trill, and often a visit to one nation will preclude a visit to certain others.

The confederation grew out of agricentric trade, and also acted as a buffer to the Ilelish revolt of the 400s. Gushiridiimi is run by an extreme socialist democracy, and high taxes reminiscent of those in some Lancian worlds are the order of the day. Gushirdiimi suffered badly in the past from exhaust pollution of its precious water supplies. This has led the government to ban private transport. On a cold moon erratically orbiting Thulm in the industrial system of Highbury lies the Ancient site of Oyrrayt. Discovered only in 823 by a mining prospector the site is located deep in a rock fissure, away from prying eyes and sensors. The site consists of three structures, one above the other: a semi-circular platform, flat side against the rock on top, a sphere below that, and an inverted pyramid at the bottom. The Unlargidgard Technical Institute survey of 835 could find no means of entry or function, but did locate the remains of a second similar complex some 13km further along the fissure. Esh Purshuur had a population of 700 million in the mid 900s. In early 980 cases began to be reported of a disease that caused the skin to just rot away. Soon identified as an airborne virus attempts were made to protect the populace but the pervasive nature of the virus meant that its spread could not be stopped. The world was quarantined but tests eventually showed that the virus was in a symbiotic relationship with a native plant, known to the locals as twedreck. The plant had developed a novel secondary reproduction method of breeding a virus that carried the twedreck gene pool to a host and then infected the hosts cells wih twedreck genes. The virus was released with the normal spore bursts, and expired after infecting every cell it could get to. A twedreck extermination campaign proved difficult due to the fact that the small pebble like plants were hard to detect on Esh Purshuur's sand covered surface. Eventually a combination of vaccination and biological warfare defeated the virus in 1003, by which time Esh Purshuur's original population was down to 17. An IISS station is now completing the scientific work on the planet and imposes strict export and quarantine controls. The planets population has begun to recover and Esh Purshuur reverted to Green travel code status in 1010.

Referee: Twedreck mutants still exist on Esh Purshuur. The original lethal mutation arose due to increased solar radiation as a result of Esh's binary system being in conjunction. Any radiation increase could cause a similar mutation to re-occur. Certain unscrupulous organisations have already carried out feasibility studies on twedreck's suitability as a biowar weapon.

Seaport is the home of the exotic Giiguuglum minor race (q.v.). The Giiguuglum are exceptionally alien, being closer to the fungal rather than the animal kingdom. Seaport itself has an ammonia atmosphere which gives the world a glorious blue-green colour, from which it gained its name. The world has no conventional animal life, with fungi representing the highest level of development and occupying the tops of the food chains.

Giiguuglum

The Giiguuglum of Seaport (q.v.) are an exotic fungal minor race. The Giiguuglum are near static creatures and all communication and mating takes place through the exchange of spores. This has made inter-species communication exceptionally difficult. The Giiguuglum have large conformal visual and olfactory sensors, but no sense of taste, touch, or hearing. Their prime sense is a biochemical one, obtained through physical cell-links and free floating spores. They have developed a biochemical rather than a metallurgical technology, coaxing plant life to create structures and using powerful pangenic spores to control other fungi. Seaport is devoid of animal life as we understand it. The biological constructions and computers of the Giiguuglum have been the cause of much interest amongst research teams, but the difficulties of communication have hampered their work. The Giiguuglum were at about TL8 when first contacted in 837, although some technologies were closer to TL11. However their lack of transportation, power, or military technology makes the simple tech level assessment useless. Their tech profile has changed little since contact, and had been fairly constant for a millenia or so before contact. The latest IISS assessment is CC-6E4DD-0000-00-E. The Giiguuglum have experimented with Imperial transportation technology but have not been that taken by it. They have though taken three heavily modified far traders in exchange for biotechnology and these craft are a unique sight in the Sector as the Giiguuglum conduct their own surveys of "alien" life.

The Vilani established the first capital of Gushemege at Masa/Isi Ahto ( 2513 ) in -7892. During the Nth Interstellar War the Solomani blitzed Masa and moved the sector capital to Kamurinmur in -2204, where it remained until the Long Night descended. After the Long Night the Third Imperium capital of Gushemege was re-established at Kamurinmur, which had survived the darkness in reasonable shape. During Civil War (604-629) Gushemege, and Kamurinmur in particular, sided against Arbellatra. On the conclusion of the Civil War many of the disgraced elements of the Navy found their way to Kamurinmur and conceived a long term plan to overthrow Arbellatra and her line. In 760 their descendents launched a rebellion which was meant to spark off an Imperium wide over-throw of Paulo 1 and the Alkhalikoi line. The rebellion had the active support of many Kamurinmur and the tacit support of the Sector Duke. After much bloody fighting the rebellion was crushed by loyal IN and IISS CSB forces. In 761 Paulo I decided that Kamurinmur had forfeited its right to be the Sector Capital and moved the Gushemege capital to Usdiki/Rure ( 1015 ), and the Sector Duchy was transferred to Duke Eneri Miikadgaa, whose line rules to the present day ( 1116 ). Subsequent investigations into the Kamurinmur rebellion linked the rebels closely with the Shakhamash Psionics Institue. This was one of the factors which led to the turn of tide in public opinion which resulted in the Psionic Suppressions. Although Usdiki has been the sector capital since 761 many Solomani still think of Kamurinmur as the Gushemege capital. This may explain why some maps and data confuse the two locations and names.

It was designed by the renowned Lancian architect Susma Pattnai and won her the Alvaar prize. The arcology specialises in high pressure chemical and metallurgical processes and deep oceanography. In 1074 Zanish's inept bureaucratic government was overthrown by Kayno Namaa, a popular singer and financier. Kayno's dictatorship was benign, but in 1093 he was succeeded by his son, who had none of his father's intelligence or skill. Miach Namaa is paranoid about being overthrown, and so has done his best to tightly control the population and to limit offworld contact. Zanish now has a police state, and the Class B starport has been wrecked by Miach's Public Safety Police ( PSP ), resulting in only Class E facilities being available.

The IISS maintains a network of solar observatories in the system, and conducts chromospheric probe research here. For the population solar weather warnings are as of interest as tropospheric weather forecasts. All of Pennelasse's electronic technology is protected against high ionisation levels, and orbital facilities are also heavily shielded. Visiting starship crews are advised not to stay in their own craft but to check into one of the free shielded shelters. Jump departures and long inter-planetary trips should be avoided during high activity levels.

Choma is a desert world whose inhabitants are mostly nomadic bedouin of Vilani descent. The choma are divided into two social groups, the Ruumaa who move around in groups of 5 or less, often solitary, and the Kisamda who move in large caravans. Violence occasionally flares between the groups, usually involving disputes over waterholes. Although all the choma use animal transport they do not shun other TL6 technology, making great use of imported solar panels. Choma is plagued by the storm rider insect swarms. It's other notable fauna is the Myem Gleece (q.v. ).

Myem Gleece

The Myem Gleece is a huge omnivore that is native to the desert world of Choma. The Myem Gleece masses 1600kg and resembles the extinct terran brontosaurus. The Myem Gleece has evolved an original way of gathering and carrying water. It is capable of secreting a conical membrane in holes in the sand that then collect moisture. The Myem Gleece then harvests these and transfers the water parcels to a "water stomach". As a byproduct these "oasis", which can be several tens of meters across, attract plant and animal life as fast as they attract water, providing complete nourishment packages. They are known amongst Choma bedouin as "Gleeceburgers".

The Niemand Brigade is a 5000 strong mercenary unit operating out of Ankhsusgar. The Brigade was founded back in 938 by Colonel Katrin Arlaingi. Colonel ( now Brigadier ) Arlaingi had been cashiered from the Imperial Marines for killing a fellow officer. She served 6 years in gaol before being released to undertake a special, and still undisclosed, assignment. A year later she founded the Niemand Company. The company's recruitment policy is to take anyone, and not to ask too many questions. As a result it has become a focus for a wide range of disenchanted civilians and ex-military. The recruits are faced with a tough boot camp, undertaken at Fort Cemoer on Mimip ( 2318 ), and at Estell Orbital Station for zero-gee and shipboard training. Life in the Niemand Brigade is notoriously tough. Recruits serve a minimum of a four year term, and NCOs must leave after 4 terms. All officers must serve one term as a trooper, and are expected to have prior military commissioned service. The Brigade consists of three active battalions and two training battalions. There is also a cavalry battalion, an artillery battalion, a logistics battalion, and headquarters and commo company. For air support the Brigade can call on a flight of aerodyne A-8 gunships, A-3 assault craft, D-32 heavy lifters and Bitburg II ground attack craft. For inter-stellar deployment the Brigade has 4 Broadsword mercenary cruisers, 4 Iylvir light assault troop carriers, 2 Far Traders converted to military ops, and 2 Type S scouts. Commercial transports are hired for the movement of elements larger than a battalion. Generally the Brigade is equipped to TL15 levels, although the majority of its operations are undertaken at TL11 for political reasons. In the last 10 years the Brigade has seen action in the Civil War on Apay Maru, in Vargr Patrol duties in Corridor, IS duties on Edat/Shire, and numerous training and aggressor deployments. There is little love lost between the Brigade and the the Imperial Marines, with many personal rivalries existing between the two.

The Tiirmmay bird is a native of Elk, a prominent agricultural world in the subsector, but can now be found on several worlds in Gushemege. The Tiirmmay bird evolved deep in Elk's jungles, where survival was a very serious business. The Tiirmmay is about the size of a terran starling or vilani uggiir, and is black with orange beak, claws, wing-stripes and chest. The Tiirmmay's distinguishing characteristic though is the fact that it is deadly poisonous. The poison permeates every cell in the Tiirmmay's body, making any scratch, nip or touch potentially fatal. The poison is a homo-vertrayka toxin, a very powerful neuro-toxin. A serum is known and is available for Cr50 on any world where the Tiirmmay is found. Without administration of the serum the effects can range from numbness to death, depending on the constitution of the person and the amount of poison that has been transferred.

Shiramuunir is one of the major centres of Lancian culture. Settled by Vilani and Kukhunen during the Ziru Sirka its development closely followed that of Kukhun, and the world adopted the Lancian philosophy soon after recontact in the early -100s. Like many Lancian worlds the citizenry is happy to leave the matter of government and law making to professionals whilst they get on with the serious business of life. On Shiramuunir governmental power has been invested in a broadly empowered provost force. All major decisions of policy direction are decided by electronic plebiscite but there after the provost manage the implementation of the necessary laws, and also enforce them. Whilst such an approach may seem strange to many it is eminently sensible to many Lancians. Since it is the provosts' job to enforce laws, no matter what they are, why shouldn't they also make and judge them. You do not end up with unenforceable laws, only sensible ones. All was fine on Shiramuunir until 1115 when a dramatic scandal broke involving senior provost officers. Shiramuunir's news channel, ORTF, revealed that the provost had been using a waterborne drug to subdue the populace of the city of Iahen, where the local Ultra group had been the source of constant attention. This was seen as a gross abuse of power and a referendum only narrowly voted not to disband the provost there and then. Maru has a carbon/sulphur based ecology and is the site of a major research centre. The aipess is the most well known of the Maruvian life-forms. At 800 kg the aipess is the same size as a terran buffalo. There though the similarity ends. The aipess has a yellow transluscent skin and 6 motor limbs. Its fearsome reputation is due to various factors: the herds of a dozen or so in which it travels, the three long frontal horns, and the long snout that has been known to flatten xenobiologists in an absent-minded flick. The snout with its furrball-like head is used to sweep the sulphur dust from the surface, so starting the respiratory process. Despite its fearsome aspect the aipess is a herbivore, although that term can be difficult to interpret on Maru. Due to the slower metabolism many Maruvian creatures have long inactive phases when they revert to a "plant" form. Even the aipess can pass through such a phase, brought on at will or when food is scarce. In the case of the aipess it buries itself except for its snout, and the snout catches passing sulphur whilst the body absorbs sulphur and other nutrients through osmosis. Maru provides never ending sources of fascination for xenobiologists and much remains to be discovered.

Rashiidaa is a desert world inhabited by the Azwhew people. The Azwhew of Rashiidaa are of Vilani descent and settled the world around -5000. If it were not for the lack of water Rashiidaa would be a very attractive world. Its low gravity makes physical work easy, and its dense atmosphere means that there is always plenty of oxygen to draw on. Rashiidaa has no native life, perhaps because of a high original oxygen content, and the Azwhew survived through harvesting transplanted succulents which grow like inverted trees in the sand, extracting all the buried moisture. Over time the Azwhew have adapted to the conditions so their bodies operate at a very low metabolic rate, taking maximum advantage of conditions, and minimising the need for water and food. With the coming of higher technology most food is now grown in vast greenhouses but many Azwhew still follow the traditional ways and live a contemplative life amongst the dunes and rocky steppe travelling from oasis to oasis. It is customary amongst the Azwhew for the women to eat first and the men to have what is left; this was essential when the most demanding action required of an Awhew was child-bearing and rearing, and the more masculine activities were less in demand than on most planets. Although the race has grown out of this old fashioned custom it does hangover in restaurants, were technically only women are served. The Azwhew are a peaceful but conservative race who have not been to welcoming of the recent suggestions that Rashiidaa be terraformed.

The Civil War of the 600s touched lightly on Gushemege, and then really only on the industrial heartland. Karunimuur and the heartland was a focus for dissent, whilst Lancia provided psy-op support to Arbellatra. The main military activity was during 607-613 when Lagan Subsector Duchess Rehta Uyess decided time was ripe to exert power. She had the backing of Dashinshaii and Shire but Truax refused to join her. An on/off war developed over the next few years with naval engagements developing to Fleet level. One well remembered incident was the siege of Idull Ra, which had sided with Truax. Uyess' forces laid siege on 017-609, isolating the world. A Truax fleet raised the siege on 318-610. Uyess was eventually defeated by a combination of economic and political moves, backed by Core support from Arbellatra, and she comitted suicide by jumping her private courier into the heart of Kadar's largest sun on 211-613.

The relatively high surface gravity and heavy molecular composition of the atmosphere combine to give the "air" an oily feel, and Eralt is known by its few inhabitants as "old napalm world". Tansa subsector lies at the centre of the Lancian Cultural Region, and contains the Lancian home, Kukhun. The Lancian culture developed during the Long Knight and stresses the importance of creativity and contribution. Creativity is evident in the art, pacifism and originality of Lancian culture. Lancian artistry and originality accounts for Lancia's dominant position within Imperial entertainment, and its strong bonds with Makhidkarun and the S'mrii. The ethic of contribution is reflected in peripheral fields like the endemic medianet and the high degree of participation in Lancian society. Most importantly it underpins the whole of Lancian economics, and the trust on which the extreme socialist syustem is based. Travellers to the region would be well advised to read up on Lancian economics before venturing into the area. For the historically minded the Cultural Region was formally established in 639 by Empress Arbellatra, partly as a thank-you for the regions support to her during the Civil War. Other major centres of Lancian culture in Tansa are Raoh and Shiramuunir.

Paatissa

The dominant early aminist religion of Kukhun. The word also refers to the people of that religion, and the body of oral law that defined. The most prominent dieties were Laancia, the goddess of the sun and of creation, and Viinntaala the goddess of Kukhun and the mother of the Kukhunen.

Viinntaala Rocks

In the mythology of the Kukhunen Viinntaala was a goddess who would descend to Kukhun in ursine form. Legend has it that she would wander the woods and tundra wastes to see how the Kukhunen were progressing and to check that they were keeping the Paatissa laws. Faithful Paatissa knew that the bear that stalked their land was Viinntaala and left her alone. But those who had lost their faith feared the bear and would hide their children from it and then attack it. The bear would kill them for their unfaithfulness. But Viinntaala would be sorrowed that they had lost their way and that she had had to kill them and so she would turn her ursine self to stone and return her soul to the heavens. These large lonely rocks which Viinntaala left became sites of worship for the Paatissa, and often villages would be built close by, the rocks serving as a reminder that the Paatissa laws should be kept and that Viinntaala may one day visit and put their faith to the test. Needless to say contemporary geologist claim that the rocks are nothing but simple erratics left behind by the last ice age on Kukhun.
